39 Fabulous Porch Ideas To Change Your Outdoor Room

Does the word porch make you think of a summer evening, sitting in a comfortable chair and watching the world go by as you sip a tall, cool beverage? While houses have become more oriented to the back rather than front yard, porches have never completely gone out of style.

Like any outdoor room, a porch is a continuation of one’s living space, whether it’s extended in front as a welcoming refuge, in the back as a screened-in or covered way to experience the outdoors, or wrapping around the house, for an easy outdoor escape from any door.

If designing a new porch, consult an architect and licensed contractor to ensure it is designed correctly. Unlike a patio or deck, a porch is an appendage of extension of a house, and an architect knows her or his way through the design and structural issues that will be encountered.

Why are front porches so often sad and droopy? They’re the first impression your home puts out, yet so many are woefully neglected. (No judgement here, believe me. I just take notes on what I see.) Case in point: this lovely farmhouse, which is absolutely lovely, but could use a boost. Click to see what it looks like now, and what you can learn from this, and a bunch of other makeovers

It’s no secret that we Southerners live for our porches. Is there any memory sweeter than those of childhood suppers on screened porches, or swinging the night away on the perfectly-designed porch.

Face it: we pay for our mild winters with our sultry summers, and while modern air-conditioning may have made those deep porches of the past unnecessary, our Southern spirit just can’t imagine our homes without our porches, whether they’re wraparound, screened in, or a whole new porch design idea.
